The Evolution of the Urdu Ghazal: From Amir Khusrau to Modernity

The Urdu Ghazal is not merely a poetic genre; it is a profound philosophical mirror of the South Asian civilizational psyche. Originating in 10th-century Arabic Qasida and Persian court poetry, the Ghazal blossomed into its most expressive, humane form when it integrated with the vernacular idioms of North India through Hazrat Amir Khusrau and the Delhi Sufi mystics. From the melancholic pathos of Mir Taqi Mir in Mughal Delhi to the existential skepticism and brilliance of Mirza Ghalib, the ghazal captured the zenith of classical mastery. In the 20th century, poets like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ahmad Faraz, and Parveen Shakir demonstrated that this traditional form possesses the infinite elasticity required to voice modern struggles for freedom, democracy, and female agency.
